SAO’s Scott DeViney and Stacie Tellers advocate on behalf of Washington's governments in GASB advisory roles

As part of SAO's role in promoting accountability and transparency in government, our staff is committed to advocating for continual improvement in the accounting and financial reporting rules that governments follow. For state and local governments, the authority that determines Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) is the Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB).
Scott DeViney, SAO's Assistant Director for Quality Assurance, recently spent time at GASB's headquarters in Connecticut sharing his input and expertise while connecting with colleagues and stakeholders to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of government accounting standards and guidance.
Scott is a member of the advisory committee to GASB, which he was appointed to in his role as the chair of the Association of Government Accountants’ (AGA) Financial Management Standards Board. Scott is a voice to help shape and refine financial reporting standards, and address emerging issues that affect local governments in Washington.
At GASB’s invitation, he also gave testimony at a recent public hearing gathering stakeholder input on the structure of future accounting standards. Stacie Tellers, Audit Manager for SAO's Local Government Support team, also participated in another GASB public forum session earlier this month.
“Scott and Stacie's passion for transparency in government finance makes them a natural for these leadership roles,” said Washington State Auditor Pat McCarthy. “Washington's local governments will benefit from their advocacy for clear, logical accounting standards that serve the public interest.”
Scott has been with our Office since 2000 and Stacie since 2018, illustrating their dedication to public service.
