Can anyone view financial data filed by local governments?
Yes: visit the
Local Government Financial Reporting System page. It is important to remember this system has its limitations:
We have not audited the data – the reports database shows information provided directly by the local governments, and neither the state of Washington nor its agencies, officers, or employees can guarantee the accuracy or timeliness of the information.
Some data may be missing – the organizations may not have filed yet, or the organization itself may no longer exist.
Large variations from year to year may be due to annexations and incorporations of local governments, but these reports provide only raw numbers – not explanations.
Why should our local government organization file online?
Save time: You only prepare required items, and you can start the filing process early.
Greater accuracy: Using the option "Test validity of BARS coding" allows you to "save as you go," and it has built in analytical steps and reconciliations.
Gain efficiency: No CDs to burn, no paper to copy, and no postage to buy. You will receive instant electronic confirmation that we received your report.
Where do I log in to file online? Go to the Sign in/Sign up page to complete your online filing. If you don't already have an account, the next step allows you to create a username and password.
Where can I find BARS reporting templates? This page has Microsoft Word and Excel templates to help you prepare annual financial reports.
Should we choose cash basis or prepare a GAAP chart of accounts? This document (pdf, 75kb) can help you decide.
