The responsibilities of the State Auditor’s Office are carried out by more than 300 employees located in 17 regional offices across Washington, including our headquarters in Olympia.
Our State and Local Auditors perform financial and accountability work. Journey-level auditors in this division are classified as Assistant State Auditor 3. Employees in these positions are responsible for serving as the auditors-in-charge, leading and mentoring other audit staff.
The office has also established two levels of in-training positions, Assistant State Auditor 1 and Assistant State Auditor 2. Our in-training staff are provided instruction and on-the-job experience designed to support their growth to the journey-level position. Eperienced audit staff have opportunities to specialize in IT audits, Whistleblower and other investigations, and audit-area specialists, such as special-purpose districts.
Our performance auditors conduct comprehensive, independent performance audits of state and local government. Journey-level performance auditors are classified as Performance Auditor II. Employees in these positions generally have overall responsibility for each audit assigned to them, from planning through final presentation. There are two in-training levels, Associate Performance Auditor and Performance Auditor I.
Promotional opportunities to audit management and technical audit specialists are also offered.
Additionally, the mission of the Office is supported by more than 50 professional and paraprofessional positions in budget and financial management, information technology, human resources, contracting, audit report production, audit support and communications. Most of these positions are in Olympia.
