The responsibilities of the State Auditor’s Office are carried out by more than 300 employees located in 20 regional offices across Washington State, including Olympia.

Our journey-level auditors are classified as Assistant State Auditor 3. Employees in these positions are responsible for serving as the auditors-in-charge, leading and mentoring other audit staff. 

The office has also established two levels of in-training positions, Assistant State Auditor 1 and Assistant State Auditor 2. Our in-training staff are provided instruction and on-the-job experience designed to support their growth to the journey level position.

Experienced audit staff have opportunities to specialize in areas including:

• IT Audits
• Whistleblower and other investigations
• Audit-area specialists, such as special-purpose districts

Promotional opportunities to audit management and technical audit specialists positions are also offered.

Additionally, the mission of the Office is supported by more than 50 professional and paraprofessional positions in budget and financial management, information technology, human resources, contracting, audit report production, audit support and communications. Most of these positions are in Olympia.
